Reviving Our Sugar Mills: A Plan for SonySugar and Sukari
Migori's sugar industry is on its knees. Farmers are owed billions in unpaid cane deliveries. Here is my plan to revive it.
Sugar cane farming is the backbone of Migori's rural economy. Yet for years, our farmers have suffered from delayed payments, mill closures, and the dumping of cheap imported sugar.
SonySugar in Awendo — the lifeline of cane farmers in Rongo, Awendo, Uriri, and Suna — has been struggling. Farmers are owed billions in unpaid cane deliveries. The mill runs intermittently. Out-growers are abandoning cane for maize and beans.
As Governor, I will work with the national government and cane farmers' associations to: (1) clear the outstanding cane arrears through a verified, transparent audit; (2) recapitalise SonySugar through a public-private partnership; (3) enforce prompt payment of farmers within 30 days of delivery; (4) establish a Migori Sugar Stabilisation Fund to cushion farmers during price shocks; and (5) promote value addition — refined sugar, ethanol, and bagasse-based electricity.
Our farmers deserve dignity. Our mills deserve revival. We will deliver both.
